About ‘Mother’s Day’
Mother’s Day is a special day dedicated to honouring and appreciating mothers, mother figures, and maternal bonds. It is celebrated in many countries but on different dates worldwide.
Key Facts About Mother’s Day
Purpose: To show love, gratitude, and appreciation for mothers and maternal figures.
Date:
UK (Mothering Sunday) – The fourth Sunday of Lent (March or April, varies each year).
Most other countries (including the US, Canada, and Australia) – The second Sunday in May.
Origins:
The UK’s Mothering Sunday has Christian roots, historically a day when people visited their "mother church."
The modern version (especially in the US) was founded by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official holiday in 1914.
How is Mother’s Day Celebrated?
💐 Giving gifts – Flowers (especially carnations), chocolates, or handmade presents.
🍽️ Special meals – Breakfast in bed, afternoon tea, or dining out.
💌 Cards & messages – Expressing love and gratitude.
👩👧👦 Spending time together – Family outings or quality time at home.
🎭 Church services & traditions – Especially in the UK for Mothering Sunday.
