Welcome to May! This month is a breath of fresh air for the classroom, moving fully into the "Great Outdoors." With the arrival of warmer weather, the curriculum shifts toward growth, sustainability, and physical well-being, while also celebrating the diverse identities of our families and global communities.
To help you plan a truly engaging month, we've connected these key dates with popular EYFS/KS1 themes! Below you will find possible curriculum connections, provision ideas and playful starting points within optional themes.
📌 Biodiversity, Gardening, and the Great Outdoors 🐝🌱
May is perhaps the strongest month for Understanding the World. It provides a perfect platform to move learning outside and explore the delicate balance of our ecosystems.
Special Dates:
Thu 21st - Outdoor Classroom Day: A day to move all areas of provision outside, from messy play to literacy.
Wed 20th - World Bee Day & Fri 22nd - International Day for Biological Diversity: Focusing on "minibeasts," pollination, and how small creatures help the whole planet.
Fri 15th - Endangered Species Day & Sat 23rd - World Turtle Day: Discussing conservation and why some animals need extra help to survive.
Thu 23rd - Sun 31st - National Children’s Gardening Week: Focusing on the life cycle of plants, "farm to fork," and the patience of growing our own food.
Common Themes:
Minibeasts, Life Cycles, Habitats, Endangered Animals, Plants and Gardening.
📌 Health, Well-being, and Moving Our Bodies 🧘♂️☀️
With "Walking Month" and "Sun Awareness Week," May is the ideal time to focus on Physical Development and PSED, helping children understand how to keep their bodies and minds healthy.
Special Dates:
National Walking Month & Mon 18th - Fri 22nd - Walk To School Week: Promoting physical activity, road safety, and observing the local environment.
Mon 11th - Sun 17th - Sun Awareness Week: Essential learning about the effects of the sun and how to stay safe (hats, shade, and cream).
Mon 11th - Sun 17th - Mental Health Awareness Week & Sun 3rd - World Laughter Day: Focusing on emotional literacy, the power of a smile, and how to look after our feelings.
Tue 5th - World Hand Hygiene Day: Reaffirming the importance of personal hygiene and self-care routines.
Tue 12th - International Nurses Day: Celebrating a key "Person Who Helps Us" and exploring basic first aid or medical roles in the community.
Common Themes:
Ourselves, People Who Help Us, Healthy Living, Sun Safety, Road Safety, The Human Body, Mental Health, Emotions and Resilience.
📌 Families, History, and Global Culture 🌍👨👩👧👦
This theme encourages children to look at the "big picture"—their place in their family, their country, and the wider world.
Special Dates:
Fri 15th - International Day of Families: Celebrating that every family is unique and discussing the people who care for us.
Fri 8th - VE Day: An age-appropriate introduction to history, focusing on the concepts of peace, celebration, and community spirit.
Tue 5th - Cinco de Mayo & Tue 12th - Sat 16th - Eurovision: Exploring global music, different languages, and cultural traditions through song and food.
Mon 18th - International Museum Day: Connecting to the past and how we store memories and artifacts.
Thu 21st - International Tea Day: A sensory look at traditions around the world and how sharing a drink brings people together.
Common Themes:
My Family, Music and Sound, Expressive Movement, History, Geography and Mapping.
📌 Numbers, Food, and Fine Motor Skills 🧮🍪
We round out the month with a focus on Mathematics and the fun, creative side of the curriculum!
