Understanding World Hand Hygiene Day in EYFS & KS1
Let's wash away the germs and keep our hands sparkling clean! ✨🧼 World Hand Hygiene Day is a special day celebrated every year on May 5th. It was started by the World Health Organization (WHO) with a very important message: 'SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands'. The date, 5.5, was chosen to remind us of the five fingers on each of our two hands! The main idea of this day is to teach everyone that washing our hands is a super simple but very powerful way to stop germs from spreading. By keeping our hands clean, we help to keep ourselves, our friends, and our families from getting sick.
For early years settings, nurseries, preschools, childminders, and Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms, this day provides a vital and practical theme for exploring hygiene, health and well-being, personal responsibility, understanding the world (the world around us), and personal, social & emotional development (PSED) through self-care. It's about introducing children to the concept of germs, the importance of a good handwashing routine, and how they can take care of their own health and the health of those around them. This day offers wonderful planning ideas and inspiration for engaging activities that truly resonate with young minds, making learning about hygiene and health both essential and fun!
Why Is Learning About Hand Hygiene Important for Young Children?
Integrating World Hand Hygiene Day and themes of hygiene and health into your practice with young children (aged 0-7) is incredibly important for building lifelong healthy habits, preventing illness, and fostering a sense of personal responsibility.
Prevents the Spread of Germs: Teaches children that germs are tiny, invisible things that can make us sick and that handwashing is the best defence.
Establishes Healthy Routines: Reinforces the importance of washing hands at key times (e.g., after using the toilet, before eating, after playing).
Fosters Self-Care: Empowers children to take an active role in looking after their own physical health.
Encourages Consideration for Others: Highlights that handwashing protects not only ourselves but also our friends and family.
Develops Practical Life Skills: Handwashing is a fundamental skill that contributes to children's independence and well-being.
Supports Science & Health Literacy: Introduces basic concepts of health and the human body in an age-appropriate way.
Engaging Hand Hygiene Activities for World Hand Hygiene Day (0-7 Year Olds)
Let's get scrubbing and celebrate World Hand Hygiene Day with these planning ideas and activities perfect for EYFS and KS1 children. The focus is on learning when and how to wash our hands properly, and why it's so important! Many of these early years and year 1 activities can be supported by our dedicated 'Handwashing & Hygiene' resources, as well as broader 'Stay Healthy' and 'The Human Body' themed materials.
Here's some inspiration for celebrating World Hand Hygiene Day in your setting: (Please use your own discretion and knowledge of your children to ensure appropriateness of each activity and safety concerning any materials given and activity undertaken.)
Singing Our Way to Clean Hands:
Use our fun song resources to teach children how long they should wash their hands for. The guidance is to wash for at least 20 seconds.
Use our song sheets like ‘If You're Happy And You Know It Wash Your Hands', 'Hey Diddle Diddle', 'Once I Caught A Fish Alive', 'Hickory Dickory Dock', 'Sing 'Incy Wincy/Itsy Bitsy Spider', ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star', and 'Happy Birthday''.
Print out the colouring versions for a quiet time activity where children can also learn the words.
Making it Visual:
Create a handwashing display using our 'Wash Your Hands!' - Display Pack' or the smaller 'Wash Your Hands!' Banner/Reminder - Small ‘.
Put up our colourful posters to remind children of the key times to wash hands: 'After You Cough, Sneeze Or Blow Your Nose...Wash Your Hands!' Poster', 'Before Eating...Wash Your Hands!' Poster', 'After Using The Toilet...Wash Your Hands!' Poster', 'After Playtime...Wash Your Hands!' Poster', and 'After Being In The Outdoor Area...Wash Your Hands!' Poster'.
Use the colouring versions of these posters for a child-led activity that also reinforces the message.
Practical Learning & Experiments:
Conduct a simple "glitter bug" experiment. Have children put some glitter on their hands (the germs!) and then try to wash it all off. This shows how germs can be tricky to remove and how a good scrub with soap and water is needed.
Use our 'Wash Your Hands!' - Small A5 Posters' or their colouring versions as a hands-on activity, having children cut them out and place them around the room where they are most needed.
