Sound cards with individual imagery and lettering to enable quick recognition in pre-reading children. The cards are designed to encourage the children to have fun exploring vocal sounds they could use to make distinct sounds for each one. Alternatively you could explore objects in the world around which may make these sounds.
Once sounds have been assigned to each card, games can be played such as ‘Call and Response’ where an adult may hold up the card to create the sound and the children copy. With the most engaged children you may wish to make more than one sound to create a rhythmic pattern for the children to copy and then encourage them to investigate their own rhythmic patterns!

‘Five Little Speckled Frogs’ Nursery Rhyme Colouring Poster.
Great for learning number recognition and counting 1-5.
Younger children will love to explore the rhythm and rhyme of this nursery rhyme and join in, especially with the aid of visual stimulus.
Perhaps with older children you might like to highlight the CVC words such as ‘sat’ and ‘log’ to practise blending or identify all of the Phase 2 or 3 sounds or high frequency words?
Want to incorporate music? How about clapping or using percussion instruments to feel the ‘beat’? Have fun!

Game cards to scaffold the making of sounds using common items in different ways. This game has been designed to help children to begin to develop an understanding of sounds in the world around them. We purposefully chose objects which would be as easily accessible as possible that might make interesting and varied sounds when manipulated in different ways. A very fun and easy game to play… Choose one blue ‘Object’ card and one orange ‘Action’ card. Then perform the action on the object to create different sounds!

A thunderstorm! Quick get round the farm and check on all the animals. They must be a bit frightened; they’re making a lot of noise!
The aim of this game is to encourage the link between images and specific repeatable sounds (Phase 1 Phonics/Letters & Sounds).
• Choose a game piece (either the tractors supplied or use counters/small world characters of your own)
• Roll the dice (choose dice with numbers appropriate for your children)
• Move your game piece along the board
• Make the right noise for the square you land on
• First to the finish is the winner!
(You may like to discuss the pictures with the children before playing the game and assign a sound to each image.)

These card prompts are for encouraging the children to think of what sounds these dinosaurs might have made.
• Tell the children that no-one knows for sure what these dinosaurs sounded like, so we need some great ideas.
• When showing these card prompts draw attention to whether the dinosaur is small, large, or gigantic! Will this affect the sound?
• How about whether the dinosaur looks fierce or timid… does this change what they think?
An additional sound activity could be to think about the sounds the dinosaurs’ footsteps would make, paying attention to the size of the dinosaur and how heavy it would have been.

Fireworks sound cards to encourage children’s sense of rhythm and enjoyment of making sounds. Cards are different lengths to show the duration of each sound. You could introduce the sounds to the children first, for example getting them to say the long sound ‘zoooooom’ a few times in a row. Then showing them that the ‘bang’ sound is shorter and two bangs are equal to one zoooooom! You could follow this by showing the cards so that they have a visual cue as you develop different rhythms with them.

These animal sound cards (like our snap cards) are intended to be folded and then laminated to create a more sturdy final product which can be reused many times. Perhaps you could lay the cards face down on the table/floor and take it in turns to select a card. Whoever selects a card must turn it over so that only they can see the animal on the other side. Their challenge is then to make the noise of the animal and everyone else has to guess which animal card they have. Before you play the game you may like to go through the cards together and discuss what sounds you think each animal makes. If you have a group of children you may end up with a few different versions for each animal e.g. some may go for the sounds traditionally taught for each animal (which vary between languages and cultures) and others may go for a more realistic representation of the sounds they have heard the animals make. Have fun exploring animal sounds!
(Animals included are cat, chicken, sheep, duck, cow, pig, dog, wolf, lion and snake.)

The aim of this activity is for the children to hear the distinct difference between loud and quiet.
Show the Loud and Quiet cards to the children. Explain that when the ‘Loud’ card is raised, they can make lots of loud noises. When the ‘Quiet’ card is raised, they must be completely quiet.
Using a sand timer, start with 20 seconds of ‘Quiet’ followed by 5 seconds of ‘Loud’, then 20 seconds of ‘Quiet’ again.
Repeat or vary as needed.

World Music Day
World Music Day, also known as Fête de la Musique, is an annual celebration held on 21st June, promoting music in all its forms and encouraging people to enjoy and perform music freely in public spaces.
🎵 What Is It?
Origin: Started in France in 1982 by the French Ministry of Culture.
Name: "Fête de la Musique" is a play on words in French, meaning both "Festival of Music" and "Make Music."
Purpose: To make music accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or skill level.
🌍 How Is It Celebrated?
Worldwide events in over 120 countries including the UK, USA, Germany, Italy, India, and more.
Free performances: Musicians (both amateur and professional) are encouraged to perform for free in public spaces—parks, streets, schools, museums, and community centres.
No genre limits: All types of music—classical, rock, jazz, folk, electronic—are celebrated.
Community focus: The goal is connection, creativity, and cultural expression, not profit.
🎶 World Music Day in the UK
Though not as widely recognised as in France, music schools, community groups, and arts organisations in the UK often mark the day with:
School music assemblies
Live community concerts
