Understanding National Wear Red Day (Children’s Heart Surgery Fund) in EYFS & KS1
Let's wear something red and learn about our amazing hearts and helping others! ❤️🔴 National Wear Red Day is a special yearly event organised by the Children's Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF), a charity based in Leeds, UK. It usually happens in February, around the same time as National Heart Month. The main idea of this day is to raise important money and help people learn more about children and grown-ups who are born with a heart condition. The money raised helps the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit, which is a special hospital unit that looks after these patients. People are asked to wear red on this day and give a donation to help CHSF. Their work includes buying special equipment, helping families, and supporting doctors who are learning more about heart conditions.
For early years settings, nurseries, preschools, childminders, and Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms, this day provides a wonderful and empathetic theme for exploring the human body (focusing on the heart), health and well-being, kindness and friendship, people who help us (doctors and nurses), and personal, social & emotional development (PSED) through understanding and supporting others. It's about introducing children to the idea of a healthy body, understanding differences, and learning how we can help people in our community, especially those who need extra care. Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be dinosaurs with this set of 8 Dinosaur Activity Challenge cards. Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! Which colours can you spot? Why not be creative with this resource?…
If at home, perhaps watching a fireworks display (outside or from a window), encourage your child(ren) to look out for the colours on the chart and tick them off as they see them.
Alternatively, watch a recording of a fireworks display and even hit pause to discuss and identify the colours you see.
For a more physical sensory experience, why not create objects to represent fireworks in a tuff spot or on a trail around your setting/home in the appropriate colours? Children can then tick them off as they find each colour.
If your children need extending, consider an element of counting and perhaps even tally mark making.

Firework explosion themed size ordering pictures. Intended to be cut out (and ideally laminated) for use by children in repeatable size ordering activities. If you have access to a fuzzy felt board, why not stick velcro tabs on the back so that children can move them around on the board? Alternatively use them as a cut and stick activity (to also strengthen fine motor skills) for the children to take home and discuss with their families using words such as ‘small, smaller, smallest, big, bigger, biggest’.

For example children may like to independently select a colour and search for matching colours around the setting/house. In group activities an adult may ask questions and encourage children to find the right colour on their fan and hold it up so that the adult may quickly see who has secure understanding and who may need more support.

Colour sorting game to aid learning and consolidation of colour recognition. Print colour names and cut out objects in order for children to match the objects to the correct colours. Laminate for multiple uses or use as a cut and stick activity (to also strengthen fine motor skills) for children to take home and discuss with their families. ‘Our Favourite Colours’ Pictogram Chart pictures designed for children to not only think about their favourite colour, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts. Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place any of the eight large colour splats on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller colour splat above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of colour splats on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like red?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like yellow than blue?’ Colours included are: red, yellow, pink, purple, orange, brown, green & blue.
