N.B. The first three animals are true hibernators that sleep through the winter (bat, dormouse & hedgehog). Although the rest of the animals are not true hibernators (bear, badger, turtle, squirrel & butterfly) they do take extended deep sleeps, waking periodically as needed. These animals have been included as they are often seen as hibernators (especially by young children) and are therefore closely linked to this topic.

These checklists are intended to focus the children on looking for aspects of the natural world around them on a wildlife walk.
The descriptions of each item are broad rather than specific so that there is greater scope for being able to complete each one. For example, the bird section can be ticked off when ANY bird is seen rather than a specific species.
The second sheet has spaces for small drawings/marks when recording what is seen.

This ‘myth buster’ fact sheet is not intended for use with children, but for practitioner background knowledge. It explains that while lots of animals slow down in winter, they don't all "hibernate" in the same way. The key differences lie in how deeply they sleep, how much control they have over their body temperature, and how easy it is for them to wake up.
We hope you find it useful!

Helping Wildlife in Winter | EYFS & KS1 ‘Winter’ Provision
The sub-theme 'Helping Wildlife in Winter' is a fantastic way to link the main 'Winter' theme to practical Understanding the World and Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) learning. It encourages children to develop empathy and responsibility by actively investigating the challenges local animals face in the cold and finding ways to support them, such as making bird feeders or providing shelter.

If you have access to a fuzzy felt board, why not stick velcro tabs on the back so that children can move them around on the board? Alternatively use them as a cut and stick activity (to also strengthen fine motor skills) for the children to take home and discuss with their families using words such as ‘small, smaller, smallest, big, bigger, biggest’.

Footprints in the Snow | EYFS & KS1 ‘Winter’ Provision
The sub-theme 'Footprints in the Snow' perfectly links to the overarching 'Winter' theme by turning outdoor exploration into a focused scientific investigation and a communication and language opportunity. It encourages children to be curious observers as they examine and compare the tracks left by animals and people, helping them develop hypothesis and inference skills about who has been busy in the cold environment.

Polar Animals | EYFS & KS1 ‘Winter’ Provision
The 'Polar Animals' sub-theme offers an exciting way to explore the overarching 'Winter' theme by focusing on how animals like polar bears and penguins survive and thrive in permanently cold, snowy environments. This naturally links to discussions about adaptation, comparing how these creatures have developed special features (like blubber and thick fur) to cope with the extreme conditions associated with winter.

Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be polar animals! Set of 7 Polar Animal Activity Challenge cards, including: arctic fox, polar bear, walrus, reindeer, penguin, arctic hare and narwhal.
Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front.
Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

Polar Bears who are about to give birth dig themselves a den in the snow. They generally incorporate the features in this poster. Mother Polar Bears most frequently give birth to twins. Sometimes they may have one cub, less frequently three cubs and rarely four. It is important that the mother and her cubs stay protected in their den for the coldest Winter months after the cubs are first born. Most expectant Polar Bears dig their dens in mid to late October. Mother and cubs emerge from their den in late March or April.

Winter Clothes, Weather & Seasonal Changes | EYFS & KS1 ‘Winter’ Provision
Learning about Winter Clothes, Weather and Seasonal Changes is vital for connecting the main 'Winter' theme to children's everyday experiences and promotes Understanding the World and Self-Care skills. It encourages children to observe the changing weather (e.g., frost, ice, short days), discuss the importance of appropriate clothing for warmth and safety, and understand the practical impact of the season on their lives and environment.
🌍 Spark your children's curiosity about the changing year with our wonderful Seasons: Sort & Match Activity Cards! This engaging printable resource is perfect for EYFS and KS1 children…
Ideal for use as part of a Winter display to visually highlight the changes that happen following Autumn. Cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language. When used as part of a display or offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Younger children may point to familiar objects when prompted e.g. ‘Where’s the frost?’ and learn new words as you describe to them what is in the picture. As children progress, more ground may be covered such as ‘What colours can you see?’, ‘Which is your favourite card?’, ‘Why do you like this picture the best?’, ‘What do you think trees will look like in the Spring?’, ‘Have you seen any of these signs of Winter?’, ‘Where?’, ‘When?’, ‘Who were you with?’, ‘Shall we go outside and see which of them we can find?’ You may like to use our ‘Winter Checklists’ as an activity prompt for searching outside.

When offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Younger children may point to familiar objects when prompted e.g. ‘Where’s the tree?’ and learn new words as you describe to them what is in the picture. As children progress, more ground may be covered such as ‘What colours have you used?’, ‘How many snow drop flowers are there in this picture?’, ‘Which is your favourite card?’, ‘Why do you like this picture the best?’, ‘Have you seen any of these signs of Winter?’, ‘Where?’, ‘When?’, ‘Who were you with?’, ‘Shall we go outside and see which of them we can find?’ If children take their pictures home, further consolidation of new vocabulary and Winter facts may arise through additional communication with those at home.

Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance! Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

Outdoor Winter Explorers/Forest School | EYFS & KS1 ‘Winter’ Provision
The sub-theme 'Outdoor Winter Explorers' beautifully integrates Forest School principles with the 'Winter' theme by encouraging children to become active investigators of their local environment, even when it's cold. This approach fosters a deep connection with nature and promotes holistic development as children use all their senses to discover the subtle signs of winter, such as frost, ice, and bare branches.

As with the display full colour versions, these colouring cards are ideal to visually highlight the changes that happen following Autumn. In conjunction with developing fine motor skills and expressive arts and design elements (e.g. the choice of colours), cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language.

As with the display full colour versions, these colouring cards are ideal to visually highlight the changes that happen following Autumn. In conjunction with developing fine motor skills and expressive arts and design elements (e.g. the choice of colours), cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language.

Have great fun with your children whilst all acting out Winter sights with this set of 8 Winter Activity Challenge cards. For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance! Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

The editable DOCX file version of this certificate can be adapted for any purpose as the text is fully editable (including font). This means that the child’s name, date and purpose of the certificate can all be changed. Any images may also be moved and resized.
Although not shown on the cover images, we have also created non-editable PDF files which are blank versions of each certificate for those of you who would prefer to write personalised text by hand.
Why not use in conjunction with our WINTER REWARD CHART?
