Build a record of a familiar place through the year. Children revisit, notice the weather and living things, keep dated drawings or photographs, and compare their evidence. Simple daylight bars help them explore how the time between sunrise and sunset varies.

Begin with one familiar place

Choose a safe, accessible viewpoint such as a garden corner, playground tree or window view. Mark the viewpoint on a simple plan or photograph. Revisit throughout all four seasons, with more than one observation within each season where possible. Short, regular visits are more useful than trying to fill every sheet at once.
