Eight illustrated invitations for using taught phonics during meaningful play. Offer a card when it supports something a child wants to do, and let the child choose the content, materials and purpose. The same cards can travel between provision areas with the Known Phonics Provision Toolkit.

Read the invitation together

Read the prompt aloud and use the picture to explain its meaning. Children are not expected to decode the card text independently. Show one or two relevant cards rather than displaying all eight as tasks to complete. A child may accept, adapt or decline an invitation; allow sustained play to continue.

Use pictures to clarify the purpose

The illustrations show labelling, signs, writing, reading, messages, lists and plans. They are examples, not instructions to copy the pictured activity or use particular vocabulary. Blank labels and simple marks in the pictures are not reading material or handwriting models. Use the child’s real object, idea or writing alongside the card.
