Autumn Resources
Autumn Explore and Investigate Prompt Cards
Ten invitations to explore autumn materials, movement and change through real play. Place a card beside suitable provision and follow the child’s interest. Use what is available locally. The illustrations show possible ways to explore; children can adapt the activity and follow their own ideas.
Using the cards
Prompt: an invitation to play.
Wonder: an optional question to share when it fits the moment.
Vocabulary: words for adults to model alongside gestures, signs or communication aids. Children do not need to read the cards or answer the questions.
- Offer one or two cards at a time.
- Watch, comment, allow repetition and welcome children’s ideas.
- Compare what happens when one thing changes.
- Revisit discoveries through talk, photographs or marks.
- These are starting points for play, not tasks to complete.
Adapt to the child
Preschool and Reception: explore the invitations with suitable resources and adult support.
Toddlers: simplify to one action and use large, safe alternatives.
Babies: share autumn colours, watch leaves move out of reach or explore a short play scarf with an adult. Small natural finds are not suitable for babies or children who mouth objects.
Offer floor, seated or table-height access, easy reach and suitable grips. Watching, gesturing, directing an adult or using a communication aid are ways to join in. Offer tools or alternatives for textures a child prefers not to touch. Follow children’s interests without making every area autumn-themed.
