Understanding National Nestbox Week in EYFS & KS1
Let's give our feathered friends a home! 🐦🏡 National Nestbox Week is an annual event in the UK, organised by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). It typically runs from February 14th to 21st. This special week aims to encourage everyone – from individuals to schools and communities – to put up nest boxes in their gardens and local green spaces. It highlights the crucial importance of providing vital nesting and roosting sites for wild birds, especially as natural habitats and traditional nesting places become scarcer due to urban development and habitat loss.
For early years settings, nurseries, preschools, childminders, and Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms, this week provides a fantastic and tangible theme for exploring wildlife conservation, animal habitats, life cycles, understanding the world, and caring for nature. It's about introducing children to the needs of local birds, fostering empathy for wildlife, and understanding how human actions can positively impact the environment. This week offers wonderful planning ideas and inspiration for engaging activities that truly resonate with young minds, making learning about ecology and environmental stewardship both practical and deeply rewarding.
Why Is Teaching About Birds & Nestboxes Important for Young Children?
Integrating lessons about birds and nestboxes into your practice with young children (aged 0-7) fosters their connection with local wildlife, helps their understanding ecological needs, and develops an early sense of environmental responsibility.
Understanding Habitats: Teaches children about the specific needs of birds for shelter, food, and safe places to raise young.

Why not use this fun farm animals and their young puzzle game to introduce your children to or consolidate their knowledge of farm animals? Cut each puzzle along the line in the middle and invite your children to match each farm animal with its offspring. Why not extend learning by discussing similarities and differences between the older and younger animals and also between the different types of animals? These endless puzzles are perfect to show the cyclic nature of life cycles. For example in the first instance the frog puzzle may be placed in the order ‘frogspawn’, ‘tadpole’, ‘froglet’ and then ‘frog’. To demonstrate to children that the frog then lays frogspawn, the ‘frogspawn’ piece may be brought to connect with the ‘frog’ piece at the end and thus continuing the cycle. This process can continue for as long as you like, bringing the ‘tadpole’ piece to then end and then the ‘froglet’ piece and so on!

Help your robin find the seeds in the birdfeeder to help him through the winter with this fun and engaging Letters and Sounds game.
Designed as part of the ‘Helping Wildlife in Winter’ set.
Two different boards to choose from - one for Phase 2 Sounds and another for Phase 3 Sounds. Dice required. Children choose a robin to place at the start, roll the dice and move the appropriate number of sound squares towards the birdfeeder. When they land on a sound square they can practise saying the sound. Have fun!

Intended to be cut out (and ideally laminated) for use by children in repeatable size ordering activities. If you have access to a fuzzy felt board, why not stick velcro tabs on the back so that children can move them around on the board? Alternatively use them as a cut and stick activity (to also strengthen fine motor skills) for the children to take home and discuss with their families using words such as ‘small, smaller, smallest, big, bigger, biggest’.

Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Feed the Sparrow’ counting puzzles? Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number beside the sparrow with the corresponding number of hazelnuts to feed them.
Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.
Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.
Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the hazelnuts, counting as they go.
In addition, each number is also written as a word. For our youngest children, this adds to learning about text in the environment and how it has meaning. Our oldest children may start to recognise the words and associate them with the numbers. This will be beneficial for when they begin to read and write these words in subsequent years as they will have something to build on.
