Our FREE Winter: Big/Small Size Comparison Colouring Sheets are incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years and KS1 environments:
Focused Colouring Activity:
Provide a sheet with a large and a small object, for example, the big and small woolly hat.
Engage children in a discussion about the differences. Ask questions like, "Which hat is big? Which hat is small?" and "Why do you think one is big and one is small?". This is excellent for provoking communication and language.
You could even challenge them to use a different colour for the 'big' item and the 'small' item.
Fine Motor Skills Development: The act of colouring within the lines helps to strengthen hand muscles, improve pencil grip, and enhance hand-eye coordination.
Mathematical Concepts: This activity provides a concrete way to teach the concept of size comparison. Children are visually reinforcing the vocabulary of "big" and "small" as they colour. You can extend this by using a tape measure to measure the height or width of the images.
Child-Led Invitation to Play: Leave a selection of the sheets and various colouring tools in a continuous provision area. Children may naturally begin to compare the sizes of the objects, prompting their own conversations and learning.
Display Aid: The completed sheets, especially if they are coloured with contrasting colours for the 'big' and 'small' items, make a vibrant and educational addition to a winter-themed display board.

EYFS Framework:
Mathematics (Shape, Space and Measure): Children use everyday language to talk about size and make comparisons. They compare objects and talk about 'big' and 'small'.
Physical Development (Fine Motor Skills): Colouring within defined areas helps to develop precise hand movements, strengthen pencil grip, and enhance hand-eye coordination.
Communication and Language (Speaking; Listening, Attention & Understanding): Children listen to questions, engage in discussions about the pictures, and use descriptive language to talk about size.
Expressive Arts and Design: Children explore and use a range of media and materials, developing their own ideas and expressing creativity through their choice of colours.
