Our FREE Pancake Day: Design a Pancake Sheet is incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years and KS1 environments:
Preschool, Nursery & Childminder Settings:
Creative Freedom: Provide a wide array of drawing tools (crayons, felt-tips, pencils) and encourage children to draw any toppings they can imagine.
Sensory Art: Introduce real craft materials like coloured paper scraps, glitter, cotton wool (for cream), or even dried beans/peas for 'sprinkles' to create a multi-sensory pancake.
Discussion: Talk about different foods, textures, and favourite pancake toppings.
Reception Class (EYFS):
Drawing & Labelling: Encourage children to draw their toppings and then label them with emergent writing or initial sounds.
Healthy Eating Link: Discuss healthy vs. unhealthy toppings, making it a cross-curricular activity.
Role-Play Integration: Use the completed pancakes as props in a 'pancake cafe' or 'restaurant' role-play area.
KS1 Classes (Year 1 & Year 2 School):
Descriptive Writing: After designing, children can write sentences or a short paragraph describing their pancake and its toppings, using adjectives.
Instructional Writing: Challenge children to write a simple set of instructions on how to make their decorated pancake.
Art & Design Focus: Discuss composition, colour choices, and how to create different textures with drawing or craft materials.
-
EYFS Framework:
Expressive Arts and Design: Children explore and use a range of media and materials, developing their own ideas, expressing creativity, and making choices about design.
Physical Development (Fine Motor Skills): Drawing, colouring, cutting (if applicable), and manipulating craft materials helps to strengthen hand muscles, improve pencil grip, and enhance hand-eye coordination.
Communication and Language: Opportunities for children to talk about their designs, describe their chosen toppings, and discuss food.
Understanding the World (The World): Links to celebrations (Pancake Day) and learning about different types of food.
-
KS1 Curriculum:
Art and Design: Children use drawing, painting, and collage to develop and share their ideas, experiences, and imagination. They can explore colour, line, shape, texture, and form through designing their pancake.
English (Writing - Composition): Provides a creative stimulus for writing simple sentences, descriptions, or instructions related to their pancake design.
Design and Technology: Children can explore designing a product (a pancake) and thinking about its components (toppings).
PSHE (Healthy Eating - indirectly): Can spark discussions about different food choices and healthy options.
