Our FREE Lunar New Year: Colouring Sheets Pack is incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years and KS1 environments:
Child-Led Invitation to Play: Leave a selection of the sheets and various colouring tools (crayons, pencils, felt-tips) in a continuous provision area. This allows children to choose a sheet that interests them and explore the theme at their own pace, naturally prompting communication with you or other children.
Focused Adult-Led Activity: Use the sheets as a starting point for rich, adult-led interactions.
Communication and Language: Engage with children through open-ended questioning. Ask things like, "What colours have you used?", "Which is your favourite picture?", or "Why do you like this picture the best?".
Vocabulary Building: For younger children, you can use closed questions and prompts like, “Where’s the tiger?” to help them point to and learn new words. You can also introduce new vocabulary as you describe what is in each picture (e.g., 'zodiac', 'dumpling', 'firework').
Numeracy: Use the Chinese numbers sheets to count with children and introduce them to a different numeral system. You can also ask, e.g. "How many animals are there in this picture?".
Fine Motor Skills Development: The act of carefully colouring within the lines helps to strengthen hand muscles, improve pencil grip, and enhance hand-eye coordination.
Display Aid: The completed and colourful sheets make a lovely addition to a display board about Lunar New Year, showcasing the children's artwork and their understanding of the festival's symbols.
Home-School Connection: If children take their pictures home, it can spark further conversation and consolidation of new vocabulary with their families.
-
EYFS Framework:
Expressive Arts and Design: Children explore and use a range of media and materials, developing their own ideas and expressing creativity through their choice of colours and patterns.
Physical Development (Fine Motor Skills): Colouring and drawing helps to develop precise hand movements, strengthen pencil grip, and enhance hand-eye coordination.
Communication and Language (Speaking; Listening, Attention & Understanding): Children engage in conversations about the pictures, listen to new vocabulary, and articulate their thoughts and ideas.
Understanding the World (People, Culture & Communities): Children learn about a different cultural festival, broadening their understanding of the world.
-
KS1 Curriculum:
English (Spoken Language; Reading): Children develop vocabulary, participate in discussions, and recognise new words.
Art and Design: Children use drawing to develop and share their ideas and experiences. They can explore colour and line to bring the images to life.
History/Geography: A fun and accessible way to introduce a different culture and its traditions.
