Welcome to December! This month is all about light, celebration, and reflection, providing a wonderful mix of cultural and social themes. While the focus naturally turns to the festive season, it also offers rich opportunities to explore topics of diversity, kindness, and our natural world.
We've grouped some of the key dates and popular EYFS/KS1 topics to help you plan a truly engaging month!
📌 Light, Traditions, and Global Celebrations ✨🎁
December is a month of festivals. This theme connects different cultures through the common thread of light, bringing people together during the darkest part of the year.
Dates Connection:
Sun 14th - Mon 22nd - Hanukkah: The Jewish Festival of Lights, focusing on the story of the menorah and celebrating miracles.
Wed 24th - Christmas Eve & Thu 25th - Christmas Day: The Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus, marked with lights, stars, and giving.
Wed 31st - New Year’s Eve: A final celebration of light and fireworks as we welcome a new year.
Common Themes: Festivals and Celebrations, Light and Dark, Traditional Stories.
📌 Community, Kindness, and Inclusion ❤️🤝
This theme focuses on the PSED curriculum, encouraging children to think about others and the importance of empathy and acceptance in our community.

Sat 22nd Nov - Mon 22nd Dec - UK Disability History Month & Wed 3rd - International Day of People with Disabilities: A crucial time to promote understanding, celebrate differences, and challenge stereotypes.

As the weather turns colder and days grow shorter, this theme encourages children to explore the natural world and learn how animals and plants adapt to the changing season.

Sun 21st - National Robin Day: Focusing on winter birds and their habitats and what we can do to help local wildlife during winter.
Winter Solstice: A perfect time to discuss the seasons and the shortest day of the year.
