Understanding Anti-bullying Week & Odd Socks Day in EYFS & KS1
Let's make a stand together! ❤️ Anti-bullying Week is an annual event in the UK, organised by the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA), typically taking place in November. It aims to raise awareness of bullying and to highlight ways to prevent and respond to it. The week often kicks off with Odd Socks Day, a national event where children and adults wear mismatched socks to celebrate what makes us all unique. This simple act sends a powerful message that it's okay to be different and helps to start important conversations about diversity, acceptance, and preventing bullying.
For early years settings, nurseries, preschools, childminders, and Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms, this week provides an incredibly important and sensitive theme for exploring kindness, friendship, empathy, respect for differences, and personal, social & emotional development. It's about empowering children to understand what bullying is (and isn't), how to be a good friend, and what to do if they or someone else is being treated unfairly. This week offers fantastic planning ideas and inspiration for engaging activities that truly resonate with young minds, making learning about social responsibility and emotional well-being both crucial and empowering.
Why Is Teaching About Anti-bullying & Kindness Important for Young Children?
Integrating lessons about anti-bullying and kindness into your practice with young children (aged 0-7) is incredibly important for fostering positive social behaviours, emotional intelligence, and creating a safe, inclusive environment. Addressing these themes early helps children develop the foundational skills to navigate social interactions respectfully.
Promotes Positive Relationships: Teaches children the value of kindness, respect, and empathy, encouraging them to build healthy friendships. Our 'Kindness & Friendship' resources are key here.
Emotional Literacy: Helps children understand and manage their own emotions and recognise the feelings of others. Our 'Feelings & Emotions' page is highly relevant.
Celebrates Diversity: Odd Socks Day provides a wonderful starting point to discuss and celebrate individual differences, fostering acceptance and reducing prejudice.
Empowers Children: Equips children with the language and strategies to recognise and report bullying, whether they are a target, a witness, or a bully themselves.
Develops Empathy: Encourages children to put themselves in someone else's shoes and understand how their actions can affect others.
Builds a Safe Environment: Creates a culture where everyone feels valued, respected, and safe to be themselves.
Engaging Activities for Anti-bullying Week & Odd Socks Day (0-7 Year Olds)
Make Anti-bullying Week & Odd Socks Day a truly empathetic and inclusive experience with these planning ideas and activities perfect for EYFS and KS1 children. The focus is on celebrating uniqueness, promoting kindness, and understanding emotions! Many of these early years and year 1 activities can be supported by the extensive range of printable resources we have available on our 'Kindness & Friendship' and 'Feelings & Emotions' pages.
Here's some inspiration for fostering a caring community in your setting: (Please use your own discretion and knowledge of your children to ensure appropriateness of each activity and safety concerning any materials given and activity undertaken.)
Odd Socks Day Celebration: Start the week by having everyone wear odd socks! Use our 'Clothes - Design a Sock (Free Sample)', 'Clothes - Sock Colouring (Free Sample)', and 'Clothes - Sock Counting Puzzle (Free Sample)' to extend the theme into creative and numeracy activities. Discuss why we wear odd socks – to celebrate our uniqueness and to show that it's okay to be different.
Kindness Challenges: Encourage daily acts of kindness. Use 'Let's Show Kindness - Activity Prompt Poster' and 'Let's Show Kindness - Activity Prompt Cards'. Follow up with 'Acts Of Kindness' Activity And Display' and 'Acts Of Kindness' Mark Making/Drawing/Writing Sheet'. Reward positive actions with 'Kindness And Friendship - Display Certificates/Notes' and 'Kind To Me' Display Certificates/Notes'.
Friendship Discussions: Talk about what makes a good friend. Use 'Kindness And Friendship - 'What Makes A Good Friend' Mark Making' and 'Kindness And Friendship - 'My Lovely Friend' Mark Making'. Encourage children to create 'Thank-You For Being My Friend!' Cards' and 'Thank-You For Being Kind!' Cards'.
Exploring Emotions: Help children understand and express their feelings, and recognise emotions in others. Use our 'Feelings & Emotions' resources including: 'Emotion Of The Day' - Display’, 'When I Feel Angry - Prompt Templates', 'How Are You Feeling Today? Playdough Mats', 'Emotions Mat - Emojis', 'Emotions Fan - Emojis' and 'Emotions Mat'.
Understanding Empathy: Discuss scenarios where someone might feel sad or left out, and how kindness can help. Use 'Emotions - 'This Music Makes Me Feel...' - Mark Making' and 'Emotions - 'This Story Makes Me Feel...' - Mark Making' to explore emotional responses to art and narrative.
Celebrating 'All About Me': Foster self-esteem and respect for individuality. Use 'All About Me - 'Make It' Challenge Cards', 'All About Me - Feelings Station Display', 'Self-Portrait Display - Balloons' and 'When...Was A Baby' Booklet'.
Connecting with Others: Promote positive interactions. Use 'Let's Connect - With Each Other - Activity Prompt Poster'. Encourage collaborative play and movement with 'Let's - Get Moving - Activity Prompt Cards'.
Story Time: Read books that focus on kindness, friendship, accepting differences, and dealing with difficult emotions.
Role-Playing Scenarios: Act out simple scenarios involving unkindness and discuss how characters feel and what positive actions could be taken.

Sock counting puzzles (1-10).
Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Sock Counting Puzzles’?
Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number with the corresponding number of socks. Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.
Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.
Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the socks, counting as they go.

This display is intended to be an interactive self-registration display that can evolve throughout the day. The children can find and add their names to the emoji that expresses how they are feeling at the start of the day and then they are encouraged to change the position of their name as they see fit as the day progresses. It aids in the mindfulness practice of recognising emotions.
An adult can quickly check to see how the group is feeling and follow up on anyone who may have indicated that they are sad, angry, etc.
Two sizes of emoji are included so that the display can fit different settings. Large (p4-9) and Small (p10-12).
For name tags, print p13 as many times as needed.

Ideal for use within a classroom or preschool environment (but also adaptable as an individual resource for slightly younger children). Each child can colour in a set of footprints individually and then add their name (or have it added for them). After, the footprints can be placed along a classroom floor for lining up and every day they line up they are looking at their name. The sheets can also be used for younger children as part of developing the ability to recognise their own body parts and their written name.

The cards can be used as part of an input about emotions and feelings. The intention is that the cards would be held with the image facing the child/children and the prompts facing the adult. The activity should help the child/children think carefully about what each emotion feels like to them when they experience them. For example, when we are happy we may feel like smiling, dancing, laughing, etc. This process aids in the mindfulness practice of recognising emotions.

It can often be difficult for children (and anyone) to deal with feelings of worry and anxiety. Once these feelings become overwhelmingly strong, it can be difficult to get passed them.
These 2 sheets are designed for children and adults to discuss what helps a particular child to feel happy when they are worried. This could be things like cuddling a particular soft toy, colouring, playing Lego, reading a book, etc. Once strategies have been decided, the child could make marks in the box(es) that will remind them of this strategy when they need to use it. Alternatively, adults may create picture prompts to place in the box(es).

These emoji emotions colouring sheets are ideally made available to children within more focused activities surrounding 'All About Me' and 'Feelings' topics. Alternatively, each individual colouring sheet could be used as the basis for discussion/role-play about an individual emotion and then children can colour the sheet to consolidate their knowledge further.
