Understanding Smile Power Day in EYFS & KS1
Let's spread some happiness and share a big smile! 😊✨ Smile Power Day is a special day celebrated every year on June 15th. It's all about celebrating the wonderful feeling we get when we smile and when we make someone else smile. A smile is a powerful tool—it can show someone we're happy, it can help a friend feel better, and it can even make us feel good inside! This day reminds us to be kind to ourselves and to others, and to use the simple power of a smile to brighten our own day and the days of those around us.
For early years settings, nurseries, preschools, childminders, and Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms, this day provides a wonderfully positive and crucial theme for exploring emotions and feelings, mental health, kindness and friendship, and personal well-being. It’s about empowering children to understand their feelings and the feelings of others, fostering empathy, and teaching them how to build positive connections. This day offers fantastic planning ideas and inspiration for engaging activities & invitations that truly resonate with young minds, making learning about emotional intelligence and kindness wonderfully heart-warming!
Why Is Learning About Smiling & Emotions Valuable for Young Children?
Integrating Smile Power Day and themes of emotions, kindness, and mental well-being into your practice with young children (aged 0-7) helps with social, emotional, and personal development.
Fosters Emotional Intelligence: Helps children recognise, understand, and talk about their own feelings and the feelings of others.
Promotes Positive Mental Health: Encourages children to think about what makes them happy and how to feel good.
Builds Empathy & Kindness: Teaches children how to be a good friend and how a small gesture, like a smile, can make a big difference.
Enhances Social Skills: Gives children tools to connect with others and build positive relationships.
Encourages Self-Expression: Provides opportunities for children to express their feelings through drawing, music, and play.
Engaging ‘Smile Power’ Activities for Smile Power Day (EYFS & KS1)
Let's celebrate Smile Power Day by exploring emotions, kindness, connection and wellbeing. These planning ideas, provision enhancements and learning opportunities encourage children to recognise and express their feelings, build positive relationships and discover how small acts of kindness can help brighten somebody's day.
Many of these early years and year 1 activities can be supported by our dedicated ‘Mental Health’, ‘Emotions and Feelings’, and ‘Kindness and Friendship’ resources.
Here's some inspiration for celebrating Smile Power Day in your setting. The following ideas may be adapted for various EYFS and KS1 settings. In EYFS, these ideas are best viewed as invitations to explore and enhancements to provision rather than activities every child is expected to complete. Practitioners may choose to follow children's interests and conversations about emotions, friendships and wellbeing, using these resources flexibly. In KS1, some ideas may also be used within more structured teaching sequences where appropriate. Printable resources to support the following ideas may be found further down this page.
(Please use your own discretion and knowledge of your children to ensure appropriateness of each activity or enhancement and safety concerning any materials given and activity undertaken. Smile Power Day is not about encouraging children to be happy all the time. Instead, it provides opportunities to explore the value of kindness, connection and emotional wellbeing while recognising that all feelings are valid and important.)

This display/activity is intended to help the child/children identify their emotions and the experiences that trigger those emotions.
At the start of the day, one emotion is to be highlighted and discussed with the children. The children are then encouraged to tell someone if they think they experience that emotion during the day. The aim is for the children to become more introspective of their emotions, and more perceptive of the emotions of others.
As a group activity the children have the chance to learn from their peer’s experiences as well as their own.
Pack includes:
• Changeable display banner with space for different ‘Emotion of the day’ cards.
• Emotion of the day display cards for happy, sad, excited, worried, angry, confused, scared, surprised.
• Small A6 emotion cards to be placed around the setting as a reminder of the ‘Emotion of the day’.

We created this ‘Why is Teddy sad?’ pack in order for you to be able to explore with children how sometimes something may feel wrong inside when there are no obvious cuts, bruises, etc.
As well as investigating the feeling of ‘sadness’ by talking about what might cause us to feel sad and what it actually feels like, this pack could also be a doorway to talking about mental health. It also aids in the mindfulness practice of recognising emotions.

This display is intended to be an interactive self-registration display that can evolve throughout the day. The children can find and add their names to the emoji that expresses how they are feeling at the start of the day and then they are encouraged to change the position of their name as they see fit as the day progresses. It aids in the mindfulness practice of recognising emotions.
An adult can quickly check to see how the group is feeling and follow up on anyone who may have indicated that they are sad, angry, etc.
Two sizes of emoji are included so that the display can fit different settings. Large (p4-9) and Small (p10-12).
For name tags, print p13 as many times as needed.

The cards can be used as part of an input about emotions and feelings. The intention is that the cards would be held with the image facing the child/children and the prompts facing the adult. The activity should help the child/children think carefully about what each emotion feels like to them when they experience them. For example, when we are happy we may feel like smiling, dancing, laughing, etc. This process aids in the mindfulness practice of recognising emotions.

These playdough mats are perfect for gaining an insight into the day to day feelings of those in your care. Useful as a tool to explore feelings 1:1 with a child. However, they may be especially useful as a fine motor activity within a setting/school which also allows adults to tell at a glance the feelings of children within a group. This could be a particularly beneficial tool in assessing the feelings of those settling into a new setting. In addition, it aids in the mindfulness practice of recognising emotions.
